Normally we take pretty standard Christmas cards, sometimes the setting will be kind of fun and festive, but they all end up being pretty much the same. They generally include our dog children, which is a bit of a limiter because our dog children are not exquisitely well behaved. So the duration of the shoot and the location are sorta dependent on doggy behavior.Â
But not this year...after finishing up some family photos for a friend, we were driving home and I was brainstorming new and exciting concepts for family photography when it hit me! Why not take our Christmas card photos at Waffle House...in formal wear? I could almost taste how much fun this was going to be. Happily Sue was on board with this unconventional approach so we set to planning it out.
We started by mixing in some sad, beige Christmas cards surrounded by the vaguely brutalist architecture of the campus I teach at, nothing like a lot of concrete to really give you that warm and inviting vibe right? We only got a few sort of strange looks from the limited number of students on campus. Then we moved to Waffle House, which was thankfully not all that crowded so we had some space to set up the tripod without interfering with anyone else's dining experience. Our server thought that Christmas cards at Waffle House was a great idea and wondered how we were going to top this next year. She also seemed excited about our approach to making memories. So that was some nice validation along the way.
I've been trickling pictures out on the different social media avenues that I use but wanted all of the pictures to live in one place, so here you go!
